Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary

Take a trip to the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary (also referred to as the Elephant Orphanage Sanctuary), which is about a two hour drive from Kuala Lumpur.

Here, you can spend the whole day with elephants – which are either orphaned or rescued wild elephants – and play with them, take photos or even help to shower them. Admission is free but it would be nice if you gave a donation.

Activities start at 2pm though limited tickets are available if you want to ride and bathe with the elephants in the nearby river.

KidZania

The first of its kind in Asia, KidZania promises a whole day of fun. This new place for children is designed as an edutainment theme park, where kids can role-play the vocation of their choice.

The whole area is set up as a replica city that mimics the real world. As your child navigates his or her way through KidZania, he or she will get to see and learn things about the world by experiencing various occupations.

There are more than 90 occupations to choose from, so you can be certain of a creative fun time here for the young ones. Definitely worth a visit this school holidays!

Probably the most popular destination for a family vacation in Malaysia, Legoland offers more than 70 hands-on rides, slides, shows and attractions.

Everything is really hands-on and you are encouraged to push, pedal, program, steer, splash, and have a fun interactive time on the attractions. There are several themed areas, such as Lego TECHNIC and Lego KINGDOMS, where children can explore attractions ranging from experiment centres to rollercoasters. It is definitely worth a one-day visit.

LEGOLAND Water Park

The water park is the latest additional to LegoLAND and has more than 20 slides and water-based attractions.

It also boasts 70 Lego models. Highlights include the Joker Soaker (a fun interactive structure where children can aim water cannons at one another), Build-A-Raft River (a unique concept where children can customise their own raft made from Lego soft bricks before they float down the lazy river) and Lego Wave Pool, which the entire family can enjoy.

So if you are already visiting LEGOLAND, extend your holiday by an extra day so you can visit the water park. Or you can buy tickets to access just the LEGOLAND Water Park without going into LEGOLAND Theme Park.

Sunway Lost World of Tambun

This theme park in Tambun has attractions for all ages. If your kids love playing in water, then this water theme is a great spot to take them for the Malaysia school holidays.

Set in the midst of limestone cliffs and jungle, it has activities ranging from tube rides and a wave pool at the Water Park to rollercoaster rides and adventure trails at the Amusement Park.

Those who want their children to learn more about nature should check out the Tiger Valley and the Petting Zoo.

And our final pick of fun activities for kids during the Malaysia school holidays involves a family trip into nature. For kids to get really close to nature, the Tabin Wildlife Reserve is the place to be. This area of lowland dipterocarp forest is home to many endangered animals, such as the Borneo pygmy elephant, tembadau and the orangutan.

Aside from animals, the other highlights here include the active and mineral-rich mud volcanoes – which attract a lot of wildlife. You can also go on a jungle trek, enjoy a night safari or night walk, try bird-watching, and learn about the rainforest.

Stay a few nights at the nearby Tabin Wildlife Resort, which features lodges set in the hills and also overlooking the Lipad River.
